On 31 December 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan City, China. ‘Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2’ (SARS-CoV-2) was confirmed as the causative agent of what we now know as ‘Coronavirus Disease 2019’ (COVID-19). Since then, the virus has spread to more than 100 countries, including South Africa.

COVID 19 is regarded as a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) condition, as per circular 25 of 2020. To this effect, on the 5th May 2020 CMS published the second version of PMB definition guideline COVID-19 document. Hosmed is using this of the COVID-19 PMB guidelines version to provide benefits for its members. In line with clinical protocols and benefit guidelines, the following COVID-19 service will be covered in full:

  • All consultations

  • All clinically appropriate diagnostic tests including Viral PCR.

  • All clinically appropriate medication; and

  • Costs of hospitalisation including all complications and rehabilitation.

From Wednesday, 23rd February 2022, the interval between the first and second doses of the Cominarty® (Pfizer) vaccine were reduced from 42 days to 21 days. Furthermore, individuals are now eligible to receive a booster dose 90 days (three months) after receiving the second dose of the vaccine (reduced from 180 days).
